What the MOT Checks
The MOT is a yearly check that your car meets the minimum road safety and environmental standards. Most cars need their first MOT once they're three years old, and every year after that. The tester works through a set checklist, and the car either passes, fails, or passes with advisories.
The main areas include:
- Lights (headlights, indicators, brake lights, hazards and the number plate light)
- Steering and suspension (play in the steering, worn joints and bushes, shock absorbers)
- Brakes (condition of discs and pads, brake performance, the handbrake)
- Tyres and wheels (tread depth, cuts, bulges and general condition)
- Exhaust and emissions (leaks and what comes out of the tailpipe)
- Body and structure (sharp edges, and corrosion in load-bearing areas)
- Visibility (the view through the windscreen, wipers, washers and mirrors)

Common Reasons Cars Fail Their MOT
Knowing what to look out for before the test can save you a lot of hassle.
Brakes are one of the big ones. Worn pads or corroded discs are common, especially on cars that sit outside over winter or do lots of short, stop-start journeys. Tyres catch out more drivers than you'd think. The legal minimum tread depth for a car is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round. Check yours regularly, and look for cuts or bulges in the sidewall.
Lights are a quick fix but a frequent failure point. Walk round the car before the test and check every bulb, including the number plate light, which people often forget.
Emissions can catch diesels out, especially cars that only do short runs. A decent run on faster roads before the test can help, but if there's an underlying fault it won't fix itself.
Suspension and steering wear gradually, so you might not notice until it's flagged. Clunks over bumps, a steering wheel that pulls, or uneven tyre wear are all signs something needs attention.
Corrosion is a common problem on older cars. Rust in sills, floor pans and other structural areas can mean a fail. That's where welding comes in (more on that below).

Can I Have My MOT Done Early?
Yes. You can have your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before your current certificate runs out and keep the same renewal date. For example, if your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can have it done and keep the same renewal date is 16 April.
Getting in early gives you time to sort any repairs without rushing, rather than scrambling in the last few days before it expires.
A Simple Checklist Before Your MOT
- Walk round and check every light, including indicators, brake lights and the number plate light
- Check the tyre tread and look for cuts or bulges
- Top up the screen wash and make sure the wipers clear the screen properly
- Check the horn works and the seatbelts click in and retract
- Make sure no warning lights stay on after the engine starts
- Clear anything that blocks your view of the road
- Make sure your number plates are clean and readable
None of these replace a proper look from a mechanic, but they sort out the easy failures.
Frequently Asked Questions About MOTs in Rotherham
Can I drive my car without a valid MOT? Only to a pre-booked MOT test, or to a pre-arranged appointment to have MOT failure repairs done, and only if the car has no dangerous faults. Otherwise it's against the law, so get it sorted before it runs out.
Can I get my MOT done two months early? You can, but the new certificate would run from the date of the test, so you'd lose the time left on your current one. To keep the same renewal date, have it done no more than one month (minus a day) before it expires.
